Xiang'an, Xiamen: neighborhood guide

Xiang'an is the easternmost of Xiamen's mainland districts, across the water from Xiamen Island. It is administratively part of Xiamen but physically separate: the island holds the old town, the ferry to Gulangyu and most of the hotels travellers know. Xiang'an is where the city is still spreading out.

The district is large and thinly populated for its size, with modern blocks in some places, older low-rise villages in others, and farmland in between. Expect wide roads, construction, and long gaps between anything you want to see. That is the trade: cheaper rooms and quiet, at the cost of walking out your door into a sight.

Metro Line 3 links Xiang'an to Xiamen railway station and the island, which is the main reason to base here. Unlike Jimei and Tong'an, Xiang'an is not on the BRT network (check).

Stay in Xiang'an if you have a specific reason: a hotel near a Line 3 station, a flight or train schedule that makes the island awkward, a work or family address, or a wish for space and lower prices. It also suits travellers who have already done Xiamen Island and want a slower base with day trips.

Skip it on a first visit of two or three nights. Gulangyu, the old town around Zhongshan Road, Nanputuo Temple and the university area are all on or beside Xiamen Island, and commuting in each morning costs you an hour of your trip. Families with small children and anyone with limited mobility should weigh the transfer times carefully.

A middle option works well: sleep on Xiamen Island, ride Line 3 out for a half day, and come back for dinner. If you want a mainland base with more going on, look at Jimei instead.

Xiang'an is suburban, so food is local and practical rather than a destination in itself: noodle shops, seafood places near the water, and canteens around the metro stations and markets. Minnan cooking is the base — seafood, rice noodles, braised pork, oyster omelette and peanut soup — with Fujian's light, broth-led style rather than heavy spice.

Concentrations of places to eat sit near Line 3 stations, around Dadeng Town and its duty-free park, and in the older village centres. Hotel restaurants are the reliable fallback if you are far from a market street. Vegetarian food is easy to find in Buddhist-temple areas and harder in ordinary roadside shops; ask for no meat and expect fish sauce or stock in some dishes.

Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before you arrive. Many small Xiang'an shops take mobile payment only, and English menus are rare outside hotels.

Metro Line 3 is the backbone: it runs from Xiamen railway station across to Xiang'an and ends at Chacao in the east. Use it for the island–Xiang'an trip and for reaching Chacao, where buses 722 and 733 continue to Dadeng Town. Buses and taxis cover the rest, but plan on 20–40 minutes between sights (check).

From Xiamen Island you either take the tunnel directly into Xiang'an or cross to Jimei and continue via Tong'an. Driving times depend heavily on traffic, so treat any figure as a range. Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport (XMN) is on the island side; allow a generous buffer for the transfer (check).

Inside the district, taxis and ride-hailing are the practical way to reach the safari park and the museum, both of which sit away from the metro. Have your destination written in Chinese characters to show a driver.

The two named sights are both in the east of the district and both need a bus or taxi. China Africa Wild World Safari Park sits at 855 Ba Yi Road in Huangcuo Village, Neicuo Town, open 09:00–17:30, with tickets around ¥60 for adults and ¥30 for children (2026 estimate). Note that serious allegations about animal welfare have been raised about this park; decide for yourself whether you want to support it.

The Xiamen A. Change Classic Car Museum is inside the Dadeng Town Taiwan Duty Free Park on Huandeng North Road, open 09:00–18:00 with no entry after 17:30, tickets about ¥50 (2026 estimate). Dadeng Island itself, reached by bus from Chacao, is the other reason to come this far east.

Beyond those, Xiang'an is a place for ordinary wandering: village lanes, farmland, the coast, and new city blocks. Do not come expecting a sightseeing district.
