Jimei, Xiamen: neighborhood guide

Jimei sits on the mainland north of Xiamen Island, across the water from the city centre. It is the largest and most built-up of Xiamen's mainland districts, and it shares the island's metro, BRT and bus network, so it feels like a district of the same city rather than a separate town.

The area grew around Tan Kah Kee, the rubber magnate who founded schools here from 1913 and later Xiamen University. That legacy gives Jimei a campus character: Jimei University, the Xiamen University of Technology campus near Xiamen North Station, and Jiageng Park by the water with the Liberation Monument, Tan's former residence and his mausoleum. Guilai Hall, built in 1962 as a meeting place for overseas Chinese, stands close to the park.

Outside the centre it turns residential and ordinary. There is no strong reason to tour the outer neighbourhoods unless you want to see everyday mainland life.

Choose Jimei when transport is the point. Xiamen North Railway Station is in Jimei, so a late bullet-train arrival or an early departure is far easier from a bed here than from the island. Gaoqi airport is only a short drive away on the north of the island. Rooms also tend to cost less than on Xiamen Island.

Stay on Xiamen Island instead if your trip is about Gulangyu, the old town, the beaches and the ferry terminals. From Jimei those become a metro or BRT ride plus a local leg, which is fine once but tiring daily. Families and first-time visitors usually get more out of an island base.

A split works well: island nights for sightseeing, one or two Jimei nights around a rail departure.

Food here is Fujian and campus-canteen territory: noodle and seafood stalls, rice plates and cheap student places around Jimei University, plus mall restaurants near the bigger intersections. Expect Minnan flavours — seafood, pork, soy and rice — rather than a tourist restaurant strip.

The safest bet is a busy stall cooking to order, or a mall food floor where you can point at dishes. English menus are uncommon, so a translation app or a photo of the dish helps. Vegetarian food is available but often cooked with meat stock; ask, and expect to be understood only in Chinese.

Central Jimei is small enough to walk between the main sights. For longer hops, use the city bus network, which Jimei shares with Xiamen; buses are modern and frequent but signage is mostly Chinese. Taxis are less common than on the island and drivers rarely speak English, so have your hotel write the destination in Chinese characters.

Motorcycle taxis wait at big bus stops and are cheap, but riders speed and it is not the safest option. For the island, Metro Line 1 and BRT line K1 are the fast choices; the BRT runs on its own elevated road and behaves like a metro. Route 959 is a useful ordinary bus between central Jimei and island stops such as SM Plaza, Xiamen Railway Station and Xiamen University.
