Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Germany ↗Germany is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Germany ↗Nazi symbols and gestures are criminal offences, including as jokes or souvenirs.
  • Germany ↗Many city centres are low-emission zones: a car needs the right sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter.

Wuppertal is a narrow industrial valley in the Bergisches Land, 30 minutes by regional train from Cologne. Its 1901 suspension railway, the Schwebebahn, runs 13.3 km above the river Wupper and is the reason to come. The city is steep, spread over two old centres (Elberfeld and Barmen) and best treated as a day trip or a single overnight stop between Cologne and the Ruhr.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The Schwebebahn is the spine: 13.3 km end to end in about 30 min, every 4 min on weekdays. Buses fill the gaps and night buses run Fri–Sat. Buy VRR tickets at machines or in the WSW/VRR/DB apps; fare zone A covers the city. A car is a liability here — steep streets, little parking.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 45 min

RE/RB regional train from Wuppertal Hbf, several per hour

Cathedral, Rhine promenade and Kölsch taverns; the obvious half-day add-on.

Düsseldorf

Regional train toward Düsseldorf Hbf

Altstadt, Rhine embankment and shopping; easy evening return.

Solingen

caution

Door to door: About 45–60 min

Regional train or bus via Vohwinkel

Blade museum and Schloss Burg; check connections, they thin out on Sundays.

Remscheid

caution

Door to door: About 30–40 min

Regional train from Wuppertal Hbf

Deutsches Werkzeugmuseum and the Müngstener Brücke nearby.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Elberfeld centre (around Hbf and Döppersberg)

Chain hotels, Schwebebahn at the door, walk to Luisenviertel restaurants. Best for one night with bags.

Luisenviertel

Old-town streets with cafés and bars; quieter evenings, 10–15 min walk from Hbf.

Barmen

Engels Haus, the Brauhaus and the youth hostel on the hill; 15–20 min from Elberfeld by Schwebebahn.

Watch out

Safety

Wuppertal is a normal, safe German city by day and on the Schwebebahn; the real risks are the €60 (≈ US$70) fare fine, steep wet stairs, and quiet stations late at night.
  • No barriers at Schwebebahn stops, but ticket checks carry a €60 (≈ US$70) fine: validate before boarding.
  • Streets and stairs are genuinely steep; plan shorter walking legs than you would in a flat city.
  • Many museums and the Bergische Museumbahnen have German-only signage or limited opening days: check before you go.
