Wuppertal is a narrow industrial valley in the Bergisches Land, 30 minutes by regional train from Cologne. Its 1901 suspension railway, the Schwebebahn, runs 13.3 km above the river Wupper and is the reason to come. The city is steep, spread over two old centres (Elberfeld and Barmen) and best treated as a day trip or a single overnight stop between Cologne and the Ruhr.
