Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
- Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
- Slovakia ↗Slovakia is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
- Slovakia ↗Motorways and expressways need an electronic vignette bought before you drive on them.
- Slovakia ↗Many high trails in Tatra National Park close seasonally (roughly November to mid-June); check the park's current closures before planning a hike.
Western Slovakia is the lowland half of the country: the Danube plain, the capital, wine towns and one castle on a rock. It is the part of Slovakia you reach first, usually from Vienna airport. Most of it works as day-trips from Bratislava; the north (Považie, around Trenčín and Žilina) is a separate overnight if you are moving toward the Tatras.

- Bratislava–Nitra by train is slower than it looks on the map; the bus is often the faster link.
- The Danube path is flat and long — plan the return leg, not just the ride out.
- Trenčín castle has steep steps and some closed sections; check opening before climbing.
Day-trips door to door
| To | From | Door-to-door p50 | Last return | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nitra | Bratislava | 100 min | check | Castle hill and old town in half a day; the bus is often faster than the train — check the last evening departure back. |
| Pezinok | Bratislava | 45 min | check | Wine cellars and a small centre; go on a weekday if you want a quiet tasting. |
| Trenčín | Bratislava | 90 min | check | Castle on the rock above the square; works as a stop between Bratislava and Žilina. |
| Záhorie | Bratislava | 60 min | check | Pine woods and the Morava border; a car makes this much easier. |
Bags between cities
Luggage storage at Bratislava main station and at the bus station is the practical option; there is no useful same-day hotel-to-hotel forwarding service in this region.

- Považie and hills (Trenčín, Záhorie)
- Slightly cooler and wetter than the plain; the hills hold snow longer in winter.
May, June and September are the best balance of weather and crowds. Bratislava's Christmas market period is cold but busy; book beds for that window.

| Budapest | Bratislava | Train or bus | ~2 h 30 | Frequent along the Danube corridor. |

| Bryndzové halušky (potato dumplings with sheep cheese) | Bratislava and regional pubs | Often topped with bacon; ask for the version without if you want it meat-free. |
| Kapustnica (sauerkraut soup) | Winter menus across the region | Usually contains sausage; a meat-free version exists but is not the default. |
| Danube fish (carp, pike-perch) | Riverside places near Bratislava | Look for it fried or in a paprika stew; check the day's catch. |
| Local wine (Frankovka modrá, Veltlínske zelené) | Pezinok and the Small Carpathian cellars | Tastings are usually by appointment in the small cellars; the town has open tasting rooms too. |
| Parené buchty (steamed buns) | Cafés and market stalls | Sweet, filled with jam or poppy seed; a cheap breakfast or snack. |
