Central Slovakia is the country's mountain core: the Low Tatras, Great Fatra, Little Fatra and the Orava hills, with old mining and castle towns between them. It is not one destination but a band of ranges and valleys 30–90 minutes apart. Pick one base — Banská Bystrica for the south and the Low Tatras, Ružomberok or Liptovský Mikuláš for the north and the Fatras — and day-trip outward. Rail and bus reach the towns; the trailheads and the smaller valleys usually need a car or a long walk.

- Snow above about 1,500 m from November to April; the high trails open from June and can hold snow into May. Ski season runs roughly December to March, depending on snow.
Summer weekends fill the Liptov and Low Tatras beds; book ahead for July–August and for the ski weeks.
