The Western Highlands run from the outskirts of Antigua to the Mexican border, split by the Sierra Madre volcanoes on the south side and the Cuchumatanes range in the north. Towns sit 1,500–2,500 m up, so travel is slow: a 100 km hop can take 3–4 hours by bus. Pick one base — Quetzaltenango for Spanish schools, volcano hikes and the Cuchumatanes; Panajachel or a lake village for Lake Atitlán — and run the markets and ruins as day-trips. Altitude is the other variable: allow a few days before any volcano climb.
