Werris Creek is a village of about 1,600 people on the Liverpool Plains, 20 km north of Quirindi and 46 km south-west of Tamworth. It calls itself Australia's first railway town: the heritage-listed station of the late 1880s is where the Sydney line splits, one branch to Tamworth and Armidale, the other to Gunnedah, Narrabri and Moree. The draw is the Australian Railway Monument and Rail Journeys Museum at the station. There is no airport, no ticket office and almost no public transport beyond the daily train and a weekday bus, so most visits are a deliberate stop between Sydney and the New England tableland, or a short drive from Tamworth or Quirindi.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet country town and generally safe to walk by day and evening. The real risks are heat, long unlit drives at dusk with kangaroos on the road, and the thin transport timetable: miss the last bus or train and you are staying the night.
  • No ticket office at the station and no ticketing agent in town: book NSW TrainLink services before you travel, as tickets are not sold on the train.
  • The train from Sydney arrives early afternoon and the return leaves late morning, so a same-day return from Sydney is not practical: plan a night or arrive by car.
  • The bus to and from Tamworth runs Monday–Saturday only, with a handful of services a day; check the timetable before relying on it.
  • Summer inland heat and long drives between towns: carry water and fuel up in Quirindi or Tamworth.
  • The hospital is a small multipurpose service; serious cases are transferred to Tamworth Base Hospital.
