Washington splits at the Cascade crest: wet forest and salt water west, dry plateau and farmland east. Seattle is the main gateway with international flights, rail and ferries, so sleep there first, then move once to the coast, the islands or the mountains. Driving times between regions are long — Seattle to Port Angeles is about 2 h 30, to the San Juan ferry about 1 h 45 — so a single base per region beats day-tripping.
