Best day trips from Warsaw: how to get there and what to see

The best single day trip from Warsaw if you want a complete change of scene. The old town is a compact grid of red-brick Gothic, a UNESCO site, with the Copernicus house, the leaning tower and a riverfront you can walk in two hours. Gingerbread shops are the local speciality and most let you watch or make your own.

Trains run from Warszawa Centralna and Warszawa Wschodnia; the station is a 15–20 minute walk or short bus ride from the old town. A full day is enough: arrive late morning, walk the walls and market square, eat, and take an evening train back.

The shortest useful trip from Warsaw and the easiest to do on a whim. Piotrkowska street is one of the longest commercial streets in Europe, lined with restored 19th-century factory owners' palaces, and the Manufaktura complex turns an old mill into shops, museums and a food hall.

It is a city of industry and film rather than royal squares, so go if that story interests you; otherwise Toruń is the better use of a day.

Both are Mazovian towns on the rail lines out of Warsaw and work as half days rather than full ones. Radom has a small old town and an aviation museum; Ciechanów has a medieval castle ruin and a quiet market square. Neither is a headline sight, so pick one only if you have already done Toruń and Łódź, or want a low-key afternoon.

Two green escapes west of the city. Żelazowa Wola is Chopin's birthplace: a small house in a park, with summer piano recitals. Kampinos National Park is pine forest and dunes with marked walking and cycling trails and a bison enclosure.

Both are awkward by train. Expect a bus plus a walk, or a car; check current connections before committing, as rural services are thin on Sundays.

Train fares on the routes above are the main cost; food and entry fees are on top. Budget roughly 100–200 PLN for a full day including a sit-down lunch and one paid attraction, and less for a half day.

Warsaw has more than one station, so check whether your train leaves from Centralna, Wschodnia or Gdańska before you set out. Buy tickets online or at the station; seat reservation is normal on intercity services.

Do not stack a day trip onto a two-night Warsaw stay — you will see neither the city nor the town properly. Keep day trips for stays of three nights or more, and leave the last morning free for the airport.
