Where to stay in Warsaw: best neighborhoods and hotels

First-time visitors should stay in Śródmieście (Centrum or Nowy Świat) for walkable sightseeing, or in Wola for cheaper hotels beside the main rail station. Choose Praga or Powiśle if you want nightlife and local food over monuments. Book early for May–September, when 2026 rates peak.

Quick answer

If this is your first trip and you have two or three nights, stay in Śródmieście: Centrum for the metro and malls, Nowy Świat for cafés and the Royal Route, or Powiśle for the river and a quieter evening. Everything on a short Warsaw list — the Old Town, the Royal Castle, the Warsaw Uprising Museum, the POLIN museum — is a tram ride or a 20–35 minute walk away.

If price or an early train matters more than postcard streets, look at Wola, the district around Warszawa Centralna and Warszawa Gdańska. Hotels there are often cheaper for the same standard, and you can walk to the station with your bag. If you want bars, milk bars and a more local feel, Praga on the east bank is the pick, but check the exact street: it is a large district and some blocks are quiet at night.

Skip the far suburbs unless you are on a strict budget or visiting family. A room in Ursynów or Bemowo can save money, but you will spend 30–40 minutes each way on the metro and lose the evenings.

Area comparison

Prices are 2026 estimates for a mid-range double room in high season and will move with events and holidays. Distances are to the Old Town or Centrum, whichever is closer.

Detail by area

Śródmieście is the safe default. Centrum puts you above the metro interchange and the Palace of Culture, with fast food, pharmacies and taxis at any hour. Nowy Świat and Krakowskie Przedmieście are the postcard streets: book here for the Royal Route, the university and the best café density. Expect older buildings, small lifts and street noise if you face the road — ask for a courtyard room.

Powiśle sits between the centre and the river. It is close to the Copernicus Science Centre, the boulevards and the museums on the Wisła, and it is calmer at night. It suits couples and anyone who wants to walk rather than ride.

Wola is the practical choice. Warszawa Centralna, the main long-distance station, is here, along with Warszawa Gdańska for some regional trains. Hotels are modern and often cheaper than Śródmieście, and the metro gets you to the Old Town in a few stops. The trade-off is a business-district feel after dark.

Praga, on the east bank, has the highest concentration of bars, clubs and independent kitchens, plus the Ząbkowska strip and the Soho Factory area. It is also the district where the address matters most: near the main streets it is busy and well lit, deeper in it is residential and quiet. Cross the river by tram or metro in 10–20 minutes.

Mokotów and the southern districts work for longer stays, families and anyone with a car. You get parks, supermarkets and larger rooms, at the cost of a metro ride for every sight.

Costs

Warsaw is cheaper than Western European capitals but not cheap by Polish standards. Hostel beds run about 90–180 zł per night, mid-range doubles 300–600 zł, and design or five-star hotels 700–1,500 zł. Apartments booked directly often beat hotels for three or more nights, especially outside the centre.

Add the city tax, a small per-person nightly fee that most accommodation charges on top of the room rate (check the current amount). Breakfast is often extra; a café breakfast in the centre costs about 25–45 zł. Parking in Śródmieście is expensive and limited, so a car is a liability unless your hotel includes a space.

Tips

  • Book 4–8 weeks ahead for May–September and around public holidays; off-season you can decide on the day.
  • Ask for a courtyard or upper-floor room on Nowy Świat and Marszałkowska — tram noise starts early.
  • Check whether the price includes the city tax and breakfast before comparing hotels.
  • Stay within a 10-minute walk of a metro station if you book outside Śródmieście; it changes the trip.
  • For an early flight, Wola or Mokotów near the airport bus and train lines beats the Old Town.
  • If you arrive at Modlin, allow extra time; it is far north of the city.
  • Buy a 24- or 72-hour transport ticket rather than single fares if you plan to cross the river often.
