Walgett
Give Walgett one night as a highway stop between Bourke, Brewarrina and Lightning Ridge, not a destination: the water tower art and the bore baths are short stops, not a half day.
Walgett is a small service town of about 2,145 people at the junction of the Castlereagh and Kamilaroi highways in northwestern New South Wales. It sits roughly 230 km east of Bourke, 140 km east of Brewarrina and 215 km southwest of Moree, so it works as a break on a long outback drive rather than a base. The water tower art and the free bore baths are the two things worth stopping for.

- Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
- Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
- Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
- Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
- Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
- Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
- Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around
You need a car. Walgett is a highway junction town and the sights sit a few minutes apart by road; there is no local public transport worth relying on. Fuel up here before long outback legs, as the next town can be 140 km or more away.

Watch out
Safety
- Summer heat is severe: plan driving for early morning and carry more water than you think you need.
- Fuel and food options are limited and some businesses close early or on weekends; stock up when you can.
- Long distances between towns mean no phone signal on some stretches: download offline maps before you leave.
- Some local businesses have closed in recent years; check opening hours before you count on a meal stop.
