Collarenebri
Stop for 2–3 hours on the Gwydir Highway, or sleep one night if you are towing a van: Walgett and Moree are each about an hour away.
Collarenebri is a 650-person village on the Barwon River in Walgett Shire, about an hour from Walgett and an hour from Moree on the Gwydir Highway. There is a café, a pub with rooms, a free primitive campground and a heritage-listed Aboriginal cemetery. It is a break in a long drive, not a destination in itself.

- Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
- Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
- Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
- Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
- Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
- Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
- Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around
You need a car. The village is small enough to walk end to end in about 15 minutes, but the cemetery is 4 km out on Gundabloui Road and the racecourse sits on the Lightning Ridge–Collarenebri road. Fuel up in Walgett or Moree: do not count on a servo here.

Watch out
Safety
- Distances are real: Walgett and Moree are each about an hour away, and the next town either way is further.
- Summer days pass 40 °C (104 °F); carry more water than you think you need and do not walk the cemetery at midday.Summer days pass 104 °F (40 °C); carry more water than you think you need and do not walk the cemetery at midday.
- Kangaroos and emus on the highway at dawn and dusk — this is the main crash risk out here.
- Mobile coverage is patchy outside the village; download offline maps before you leave Walgett or Moree.
- Roads can close after heavy rain; check the Live Traffic NSW app before committing to the Gwydir Highway.

Coming as the guide grows
- Field-check the campground (pitch count, water, shower) and the pub's room count and last check-in.
- Confirm the cemetery gate and any access rules with the Collarenebri Local Aboriginal Land Council before publishing a visit time.
- Verify the race day date each year — it moves — and whether the course is open on non-race days.
- Add a fuel-and-water fixture for the Walgett–Moree gap so the drive-through decision is exact.
