Wągrowiec

One night is enough: Cistercian monastery, the river crossing, Durowskie Lake. Base here only if you want the lakes and wooden churches by bike.

Wągrowiec is a small town of about 25,000 on the Wełna river and Durowskie Lake, 60 km north-east of Poznań, in the Pałuki borderland of Wielkopolskie. Its story is Cistercian: a monastery, a man-made crossing of two rivers, and a compact centre you can walk in an afternoon. Trains from Poznań run 8–10 times a day; the town works as a one-night stop or a lake-and-cycling base, not as a destination on its own.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Poland ↗Poland is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Poland ↗The currency is the Polish złoty (PLN), not the euro: decline dynamic currency conversion.
  • Poland ↗Most shops close on most Sundays under the trading law; small convenience stores and station shops are the exception.
  • Poland ↗The border areas with Belarus and Russia's Kaliningrad region have restricted zones; follow your own government's advice before travelling near them.

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk end to end in about 20 minutes. Buses (PKS) reach Łekno, Tarnowo Pałuckie and the lake villages; the train station sits next to the bus station on Kościuszki street. Bikes are the practical way to reach the surrounding lakes and forests.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-risk small town; the real issues are unlit roads and paths after dark, deer and cyclists on rural routes, and swimming only where the lake is supervised in summer.
  • Trains to Poznań are slow: 8–10 a day, and the line is single-track — check the timetable before you plan a day trip.
  • Lake rest centres and the campsite open only from about May to September; outside that, beds are in town.
  • English is limited outside hotels and the tourist office; have addresses written down.
  • Some rural bus routes run a handful of times a day — check the last return before you leave.
