Best day trips from Vancouver: how to get there and what to see

Four trips cover almost every visitor: Whistler for mountains and the highway, Victoria for a ferry ride and a small city, the North Shore for a half day close to downtown, and the Fraser Valley for farms and wine. Each works as a day trip; only Whistler and Victoria need a full day.

Whistler is the classic Vancouver day trip: the Sea to Sky Highway runs north past Squamish and the Chief, with pullouts for waterfalls and views. By car it is about two hours each way; by coach from downtown about two and a half hours. In winter the village is a ski base; in summer the gondola runs for sightseeing and the trails around Lost Lake are walkable.

A car gives you stops on the way; a coach is simpler and lets you sleep. Either way, leave early: the highway backs up on summer weekends and the return in the dark is slower. If you only want the drive and one viewpoint, Squamish is a shorter alternative.

Victoria needs a ferry: BC Ferries from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay, about 1 h 35 min, then a bus or drive into town. On foot, the ferry plus bus takes roughly three and a half to four hours door to door, so a day trip is long but doable if you start early. Floatplanes from downtown Vancouver cut the crossing to about 35 minutes and cost much more.

In Victoria, the Inner Harbour, the Parliament buildings and the Royal BC Museum are close together; Butchart Gardens is a bus or taxi ride north of town and eats most of a day on its own. If you want both the city and the gardens, stay a night instead.

The North Shore mountains are the easiest half-day escape: Grouse Mountain's gondola, the Capilano Suspension Bridge and Lynn Canyon's free suspension bridge are all within about 30–45 minutes of downtown by car, shuttle or bus. Lynn Canyon is the budget option; Capilano and Grouse charge admission.

Other short trips: Steveston in Richmond for the fishing village and fish and chips, White Rock for a pier and beach, and the Fraser Valley for farms, cideries and wineries around Abbotsford and Langley. All suit a half day or a lazy full day without booking much ahead.

Prices below are 2026 estimates and change with season and operator. The ferry fare is for a foot passenger; a car and driver costs more. Coach tours bundle transport and sometimes admission, which is often cheaper than paying separately.

Start early. The ferry and the highway both fill on summer weekends, and a late start turns a day trip into a rush. Check return sailings before you leave in the morning, and keep a buffer for the last ferry.

If you are here in the wet months, have a backup: the Royal BC Museum in Victoria, the Sea to Sky gondola in Squamish and the Capilano bridge all work in rain. In winter, check road conditions before driving to Whistler; winter tires or chains can be required on the highway.
