Where to stay in Vancouver: best neighborhoods and hotels

Stay downtown if this is your first trip and you have two or three nights. Robson Street, Granville Street, Yaletown and Coal Harbour put the seawall, Stanley Park, Gastown and the SkyTrain within a 5–15 minute walk, so you spend your time in the city rather than on buses.

Pick Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant or Commercial Drive if you want lower prices, a neighbourhood feel and are happy to take the SkyTrain or a bus into the centre. Stay in Richmond or near the airport only if you have an early flight or a one-night stopover.

Summer (June–September) is peak season and prices roughly double against winter. Book two to three months ahead for July and August.

Downtown covers several distinct pockets. Robson Street is the shopping spine and the most central place to sleep; Granville Street is louder at night, with clubs and bars. Yaletown and Coal Harbour are quieter, more expensive and closer to the seawall and Stanley Park. All of them are on the SkyTrain network or a short walk from it.

Gastown suits travellers who want bars and restaurants on the doorstep; it can be noisy late and some blocks feel rough after dark. Kitsilano is a beach neighbourhood west of the centre, good for families and longer stays, with buses into downtown in about 20–25 minutes. Mount Pleasant and Commercial Drive are the value picks: cafés, breweries and markets, 10–20 minutes from downtown by SkyTrain.

Richmond, next to Vancouver International Airport, is a practical base for a one-night stopover or a 6am flight, and has its own dense Asian restaurant scene. It is a 25-minute SkyTrain ride from downtown, so it is a poor choice for sightseeing.

Vancouver is one of Canada's most expensive hotel markets. In summer, a mid-range downtown room commonly runs $200–350 CAD a night before tax, and harbour-view or boutique properties go higher. Winter rates outside the holidays can fall to $120–200 CAD. Hostel dorm beds sit around $50–90 CAD in summer (2026 estimates).

Hotel bills add taxes on top of the quoted rate, roughly 12% in total including provincial and municipal levies; check the total at booking. Tipping is expected at 15–20% in restaurants and bars, 10–15% for taxis.

Short-term rentals are restricted in Vancouver, so most visitors end up in hotels, hostels or licensed B&Bs. Book early for July, August and the September conference season.
