Uva is the eastern half of Sri Lanka's hill country: the Main Line climbs through Bandarawela, Haputale and Ella, then drops to Badulla, while the province's south-east is dry lowland with national parks. Most travellers come for the train, tea estates and waterfalls, and stay 2–3 nights in the highlands. The lowlands are 2–4 hours away by road and work better as their own stop than as a day trip.

Highlands (Ella, Haputale, Bandarawela, Badulla): Cool nights year-round; the south-west monsoon brings rain and mist from May to September, and the north-east monsoon adds showers in October–November.
Lowlands (Wellawaya, Kataragama, Udawalawe): Hotter and drier than the hills; October–November is the wettest stretch.

The province sits between two monsoon systems, so one half is usually workable: dry-zone parks are best December–March, the highlands are clearest January–April.
