By air
Ukraine's civilian airspace has been closed since 2022, and no scheduled passenger flights are published for Kyiv, Lviv, Odesa or any other Ukrainian airport. Treat any itinerary that shows a flight landing in Ukraine as out of date until official sources say otherwise.
In practice you fly to a hub outside the country and continue overland. The usual gateways are Warsaw and Kraków in Poland, Rzeszów for the Polish–Ukrainian border, Bucharest and Iași in Romania, Chișinău in Moldova, and Košice or Budapest for the Slovak and Hungarian crossings. Which one suits you depends on your onward city: Lviv is closest to Poland, Odesa to Moldova and Romania, Kyiv to the Polish and Slovak routes.

By land
Land is how almost everyone enters Ukraine now. The border with Poland carries the most traffic, with road and rail crossings used by buses, trains and private cars. Moldova and Romania are the main alternatives for Odesa and the south, and Slovakia and Hungary serve the far west around Uzhhorod.
Rail is the most comfortable option when it runs: overnight and daytime trains link Polish cities with Lviv and Kyiv, and there are connections from Moldova and Romania. Buses are more frequent and often cheaper, but border queues can add hours. Expect passport checks on both sides, and allow a long buffer on the day you cross.
Crossing on foot is possible at some points, usually by walking between the two border posts and picking up onward transport on the other side. Not every crossing accepts pedestrians, so check the specific point before you commit.

By sea

From the US, nonstop flights reach Warsaw, Kraków or Bucharest in roughly 9–11 hours, and one-stop routings take longer. From the UK, direct flights to Poland or Romania run about 2.5–3.5 hours. From Canada and Australia or New Zealand, expect at least one connection in Europe.

Build in slack. A same-day connection from your long-haul flight to a cross-border train or bus is risky; an overnight in Warsaw, Kraków or Chișinău costs little and removes most of the stress. Buy flexible tickets where you can, and keep your travel insurance current — check that it covers the countries you are actually transiting, not just your destination.
