Kyiv is Ukraine's capital and largest city, on the Dnieper River in the north of central Ukraine. Airspace is closed to civil aviation, so arrivals come by train or bus from Poland, Moldova, Romania or Slovakia. If you go, plan 3–5 days, stay in the centre, and treat air-raid alerts and the 01:00–05:00 curfew as fixed parts of the day.

Getting around

Metro (M1, M2, M3) is the backbone; fares are low and stations double as shelters during alerts. Trams, trolleybuses and marshrutka minibuses fill the gaps. Bolt and Uklon are the usual ride-hailing apps. Metro trains stop crossing the Dnieper during air-raid sirens, so if you sleep on the left bank, keep a taxi fallback.

Air-raid alerts and the 01:00–05:00 curfew are the two rules that shape every day. Go to a shelter when an alert sounds, keep away from military and energy sites, and check your government's travel advice before you book.
