Ubud in May: what to expect

May is the handover month in Ubud. The wet season is ending, so early May can still deliver a heavy afternoon downpour, while the last ten days usually settle into the dry-season pattern: bright mornings, cloud building after lunch, rain rare. Ubud sits at about 200 m in the hills, so it runs a degree or two cooler than Kuta or Sanur and often catches cloud the coast does not.

Humidity stays high, so plan outdoor blocks for the morning. Rice terraces, the Campuhan Ridge walk and temple visits are all better before 11am. Midday is for cafés, spas and museums; late afternoon rain, when it comes, usually clears by dinner.

May is the last comfortable month before Bali's high season. Guesthouses and villas in the Ubud centre are busy but not full, and rates sit at shoulder level — noticeably below July and August, above the wet-season floor. Late May tightens as Australian school holidays approach and as Waisak and Idul Adha travel peaks pull domestic visitors onto flights and roads.

Practical effect: you can usually book a good central stay two to four weeks out in early May, but aim for six to eight weeks for the last week of the month. Day tours to Tegallalang, Tirta Empul and the waterfalls fill up on weekends; go on a weekday if you can.

Traffic on the Ubud–Denpasar road is heavy year-round. Allow 60–90 minutes to the airport, longer on a Friday afternoon or a ceremony day.

May is quiet on the international events calendar, but two national holidays can move domestic travel. Waisak, the Buddhist observance that includes a procession at Borobudur in Java, falls in May or June. Idul Adha, the Islamic feast of sacrifice, also moves each year and can land in May or June. Neither is a Bali-specific event, but both push Indonesian families onto planes and roads, so book transport early around those dates.

In Ubud itself, temple ceremonies follow the Balinese calendar rather than the Gregorian one. Galungan and Kuningan fall roughly every 210 days and are not expected in May 2026. If you happen to be in town for a ceremony, dress in a sarong and sash and stay at the edges of the procession.

The Ubud Food Festival and similar cultural programmes have run in past years, but dates shift — check locally before planning a trip around one.

With the dry season starting, May is a good month for the walks and day trips that get muddy in February. The Campuhan Ridge walk is best at 7am, before the heat and the tour groups. The Tegallalang and Jatiluwih rice terraces are green from the wet season and lit by clear mornings. Tirta Empul and Goa Gajah are manageable before 10am.

For a half-day out of town, the Tegenungan and Tibumana waterfalls run full in May and the paths are less slippery than in the wet months. Mount Batur sunrise hikes run most mornings; expect a 2am start from Ubud and a cool 10–15 °C at the summit before dawn.

If you want a beach day, the south coast — Sanur for calm water, Uluwatu for surf — is a 60–90 minute drive. May sea conditions are usually good on the Bali side, and the crossing to Nusa Penida is often smooth, though it can still be rough.

Pack for warm, humid days and cool early mornings. A light rain shell earns its place in early May; by late May you may not use it. Bring a sarong and sash for temples — many lend them, but having your own is easier. Reef-safe sunscreen, insect repellent for evening, and shoes with grip for terrace and waterfall paths.

For Mount Batur or any pre-dawn start, add a fleece or light down layer and long trousers. Ubud's cafés and warungs are casual; there is no dress code beyond temple visits.

April is wetter and greener, with lower prices and fewer visitors. June brings the dry season in full and the start of the Australian school holidays, so crowds and rates jump. July is peak: book beds and tours well ahead. If your dates are flexible and you want dry weather with lighter crowds, May and September are the two sweet spots on Bali's calendar.
