Ubud in March: what to expect

March is the tail of Bali's rainy season. Ubud sits at about 200 m in the hills, so it is a little cooler and often wetter than the coast at Kuta or Sanur. Mornings are frequently clear; the rain tends to arrive in the afternoon or evening as a heavy but short downpour, then stops. Some days are grey all day.

Humidity stays high, so clothes dry slowly and rice terraces, jungle and the Campuhan ridge walk look their greenest. Trails and the steps down to Tegenungan or Tibumana waterfalls can be slick, and rivers run higher, which matters if you plan rafting or a canyon trip. Mosquitoes are present year-round; March rain keeps puddles around, so repellent matters more.

March is medium season in Ubud: quieter than July and August, busier than February. Guesthouses and villas in the centre and along Jalan Hanoman or Jalan Bisma usually have rooms, and walk-in rates are negotiable, but the best-value places still fill a few weeks ahead.

Prices sit mid-range. Expect to pay less than in the June–September peak for the same room, and less again if you book late in the month. Two factors push demand up: Nyepi, when people come for the ogoh-ogoh parades, and Idul Fitri, when domestic Indonesian travel peaks and flights and inter-island transport fill for about two weeks around the holiday (check).

Book Nyepi night and the Idul Fitri window early; leave the rest flexible.

The fixed point is Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence, which fell on 19 March in 2026 (check). The night before, villages parade ogoh-ogoh effigies through the streets, including in Ubud and nearby Peliatan and Mas. On Nyepi itself the island stops for 24 hours: the airport closes, no one goes outdoors, lights stay low, and hotel guests remain on the property. Plan it as a rest day, not a travel day.

Idul Fitri (Lebaran) lands in the same month in 2026, around 20–21 March (check). It is Indonesia's biggest holiday: millions travel home, so domestic flights, buses and ferries are full and roads are slow for roughly two weeks. In Bali the effect is milder than in Java, but airport queues and hotel demand still rise.

Ramadan may also overlap the start of March depending on the year (check); outside Bali, daytime eating is discreet and some restaurants keep shorter hours.

Plan outdoor sights for the morning and keep an indoor or covered option for the afternoon. The Campuhan Ridge Walk is short and paved, so it handles rain better than jungle trails. The Ubud Monkey Forest and the central palace and market are easy to slot in around showers.

For rice terraces, Tegallalang and the gentler Sidemen valley to the east both look good in March, though paths are muddy. Waterfalls such as Tibumana, Tegenungan and Kanto Lampo are at their fullest, but rocks are slippery and some operators pause cliff jumps when rivers are high. Museums and craft stops — the Neka Art Museum, ARMA, and the silver and wood workshops around Celuk and Mas — are the sensible wet-afternoon plan.

Skip long volcano hikes. Mount Batur sunrise treks run in rain but often give no view, and the descent is slick; if you go, use a guide and proper shoes. Beach days are a gamble in March: the south coast is often wetter than Ubud, and seas to Nusa Penida and the Gilis can be rough (check).

Pack for warm rain rather than cold: a light waterproof shell or compact umbrella, quick-dry shirts and shorts, and sandals or shoes with grip for wet stone and mud. A dry bag or zip pouch keeps phone and passport safe in a downpour.

Add mosquito repellent, a sarong for temple visits, and a light layer for air-conditioned buses and early starts. If you plan rafting or a waterfall swim, bring a change of clothes and a towel. Cash in small rupiah notes is useful for warungs and temple donations, and a power bank helps on long wet afternoons.

If March's rain puts you off, April is the transition month: rains ease, terraces stay green and prices are still shoulder-level. May brings the start of the dry season and more reliable mornings. Going earlier, February is wetter and quieter, and January is the wettest month in Bali and Java.
