Where to stay in Turkey: best areas and types of hotel

Match the area to what you will actually do each day, then pick the room type. Prices below are 2026 estimates for a double room in high season and move with the lira; treat them as bands, not quotes.

Start with the itinerary, not the hotel. The parent country plan is 4 nights in Istanbul, then one domestic flight to Cappadocia and one to the Aegean or Antalya coast. Each move costs half a day, so keep bases to two or three on a two-week trip.

Then pick the district inside the city. In Istanbul, Sultanahmet puts Hagia Sophia, Topkapı and the Grand Bazaar within a 15-minute walk but quiets down after dark. Beyoğlu and Karaköy give you restaurants, bars and the tram, with more noise. Kadıköy on the Asian side is cheaper and livelier, at the cost of a ferry ride to the old city. If you have an early flight, a hotel near IST or SAW saves a 60–90 minute transfer.

On the coast, choose between a town and a resort. Kaş, Fethiye, Bodrum and Çeşme are walkable towns with guesthouses, harbours and day boats. Belek, Side and Lara are resort strips where the hotel is the holiday: pools, buffets, kids' clubs. All-inclusive suits families and short beach breaks; it is poor value if you plan to be out every day.

In Cappadocia, a cave room in Göreme is central and walkable; Uçhisar and Ürgüp are quieter and pricier. Ask whether the room is a genuine rock-cut cave or a stone building, and whether the balloon flight is included or booked separately.

Prices in Turkey move with the lira, so a rate quoted in euros or dollars can look stable while the lira price changes. Ask which currency you will be charged in and whether tax and service are included.

Two Bayram holidays fill domestic hotels and raise coast prices; the same weeks are the busiest for Turkish families. Book those dates months ahead or avoid them. July and August on the Aegean and Mediterranean are hot and crowded; April–June and September–November are the better-value windows.

Some small pensions and village guesthouses take cash only, so keep lira notes. Cards work in cities and resorts. If you are arriving late, confirm reception hours: family-run places may close the desk at night.

Check the location on a map before booking. A hotel described as 'city centre' can be a 40-minute walk from the sights, and coastal 'beachfront' sometimes means a steep path to a rocky cove.
