Step by step: how to choose
Start with Istanbul. It is the densest concentration of things a first-time visitor wants: Hagia Sophia, Topkapı, the Grand Bazaar, Bosphorus ferries and two continents of food. Four nights is the minimum that does it justice; five if you add a day trip.
- 1. Lock Istanbul at 4–5 nights.
- 2. Add Cappadocia (Göreme) at 2–3 nights and fly in, not coach.
- 3. Pick one of: Ephesus/Selçuk, Pamukkale, Antalya, Kaş/Fethiye.
- 4. If you have 14 days, chain them into the classic loop and fly home from Dalaman or Antalya.
- 5. Only add the east (Mardin, Gaziantep, Kars) if you have a spare week and a specific interest.

Distances are long. Istanbul to Cappadocia is a short flight or a long overnight coach; Cappadocia to the Aegean is usually a flight via Istanbul unless a direct Kayseri–İzmir service is running. Flying between regions is the single biggest time-saver on a short trip.
- Book the Cappadocia balloon for your first morning there; cancellations are common and a spare morning is your backup.
- Two Bayram holidays move the whole country: book transport and hotels early and expect closures on the first day.
- Carry lira in small notes; rural sites, minibuses and stalls rarely take cards.
