Turkey itineraries: 1 week, 2 weeks and 3 weeks

Pick the row that matches your days, then read the step-by-step below. Nights are minimums that do the place justice; add one spare night per week for balloon cancellations, holiday traffic and slow transfers.

Seven days: land in Istanbul, stay 4 nights on the European side near Sultanahmet or Beyoğlu, then fly to Kayseri or Nevşehir and transfer to Göreme for 3 nights. See Hagia Sophia, Topkapı and the bazaars, take one Bosphorus ferry, then use Cappadocia for the balloon, the Göreme open-air museum and one red or green valley walk. Fly back to Istanbul the night before departure or take an early flight.

Ten days: keep the same first week, then fly Kayseri–İzmir direct when it is scheduled, otherwise via Istanbul, and base in Selçuk for 3 nights. Ephesus is a short dolmuş or taxi ride away; add the terrace houses, the museum and one day at Şirince or the beach at Pamucak. Fly home from İzmir.

Fourteen days: after Selçuk, go inland to Pamukkale for 1 night (travertines and Hierapolis), then by bus or car down to Fethiye or Kaş for 3 nights on the Lycian coast. Add Kekova by boat, Saklıkent gorge or a stretch of the Lycian Way. Fly home from Dalaman or Antalya, or spend the last 2 nights in Antalya's Kaleiçi.

Three weeks: run the 14-day loop, then choose one direction. Southeast: fly or take the long bus to Mardin for 2 nights, Gaziantep for 2 (food and mosaics), and optionally Şanlıurfa and Mount Nemrut. Black Sea: fly to Trabzon for 3 nights for Sümela Monastery, Uzungöl and Ayder, then work back west via Amasya or Safranbolu. Both add long travel days, so keep the spare night.

Domestic flights are the backbone: Istanbul to Kayseri or Nevşehir for Cappadocia, Kayseri or Istanbul to İzmir for Ephesus, and Dalaman or Antalya for the coast. Fares move with season and how early you book, so treat any figure as a 2026 estimate and check before you commit.

For the Aegean leg, the İZBAN commuter train links İzmir airport with Selçuk, and buses cover Selçuk–Pamukkale, Pamukkale–Fethiye and the coast towns. The high-speed YHT train is the easy way to Ankara and Konya from Istanbul or Eskişehir. Rent a car only for the Lycian coast and Cappadocia valleys, where it pays off; skip it in Istanbul.

April to June and September to November suit Istanbul, Cappadocia, Ephesus and the coast: mild days, fewer crowds than July and August, and no need to hide from midday heat. July and August work for the Lycian coast and beaches but make Istanbul humid and Cappadocia dusty; start early and rest at midday.

The Black Sea is the exception: June to September for Trabzon, Ayder and the mountain plateaus, since snow closes high roads earlier. The southeast (Mardin, Gaziantep) is best in spring and autumn; summer is very hot. Winter is a good, cheap time for Istanbul alone, with the Aegean ruins quiet and the coast cold for swimming.

Budget travellers can run the 7-day route on roughly USD 60–90 a day in 2026 estimates, mid-range travellers USD 120–200, with cave hotels, balloon flights and coastal gulets pushing the top end. Domestic flights, the balloon and long-distance buses are the three costs that swing most, so price them before you fix dates.

Book in this order: international flights, then the Cappadocia balloon and cave hotel for the dates you want, then domestic flights, then buses and day tours. Balloon seats and good cave rooms sell out first in spring and autumn. Keep small lira notes for buses, ferries and stalls, and carry a card for hotels and flights.

The most common mistake is trying to see Istanbul, Cappadocia, Ephesus and the coast in a week. Each move costs half a day, so a 7-day trip with three regions becomes a bus tour. Two regions in a week, three in two weeks, is the pace that works.

Second: leaving the balloon to the last Cappadocia morning. Wind cancels flights, and a spare night is the only real insurance. Third: ignoring the calendar. Bayram holidays and summer weekends fill transport and raise room rates; book those legs early or shift the dates.
