Bonnyville

One night is enough: museum, Jessie Lake birding, then push on to Cold Lake 51 km (32 mi) northeast. Two nights only if you fish or golf at Moose Lake.

Bonnyville is a town of about 6,000 in the Lakeland district of east-central Alberta, on the north shore of Jessie Lake between St. Paul and Cold Lake. It is an oil and farm service town with a small museum, a lakefront birding stop and campgrounds at Moose and Muriel lakes. Most travellers use it as a bed and a fuel stop on Highway 28, not as a destination in itself.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights, lakes and campgrounds sit 5–20 km out of town and there is no local transit. Two taxi firms cover the town itself. Highway 28 runs west to Edmonton and east to Cold Lake; Highway 41 heads north and south.

Watch out

Safety

A small, quiet town; the real risks are winter driving, long empty stretches of highway and wildlife on the road at dusk. Violent crime is rare; lock the car and use normal care around the pubs at closing time.
  • Winter runs from November to March with deep cold and icy roads: check highway conditions before driving.
  • Distances between services are long; fill the tank in town.
  • Summer weekends fill the lake campgrounds: reserve ahead.
  • Alcohol and gaming venues are 18+; carry ID.
