Turkey in May: what to expect

May is the month Turkey dries out. The Aegean and Mediterranean coasts settle into long sunny days with occasional showers early on; Istanbul and the Marmara are warm but still changeable, with a wet day or two; the Black Sea coast keeps its rain in every month. Central Anatolia is the pleasant surprise: Cappadocia and Ankara are mild by day and cool at night, which is why balloon flights and long walks work well.

The east and south-east warm up fastest — Mardin and Şanlıurfa are already hot by late May, while Kars and Van are only just coming out of a hard winter. Snow can linger on the high Kaçkar and eastern passes into early June.

May sits in the high season without the July–August peak. Istanbul hotels and Cappadocia cave rooms are busy at weekends and around public holidays; the coast is filling up but most resorts are not yet at capacity, and the sea is warm enough for many swimmers by the second half of the month.

Prices are medium: noticeably above March–April and November, clearly below July–August. The one week to plan around is 15–19 May 2027, when Kurban Bayramı and 19 May (Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day) fall together — domestic travel surges, intercity buses and domestic flights sell out, and coastal hotels raise rates. Check the exact Bayram dates each year, since the lunar calendar moves them.

May is a month of festivals and long weekends rather than one headline event. Dates for religious holidays move each year, so confirm before booking.

Istanbul is at its best: warm enough for ferries and long walks, and the tulips are gone but the city is green. Cappadocia has mild days, cool nights and good balloon conditions — wind, not temperature, is what cancels flights. The Aegean ruins at Ephesus and Aphrodisias are still comfortable before 11:00, unlike July.

The south coast — Antalya, Kaş, Fethiye, Ölüdeniz — is the safest bet for a beach-plus-ruins trip, and the Lycian Way is in its spring walking window. The Black Sea around Trabzon and Ayder is green and wet; the high yayla plateaus usually open only from June. For the east, Mardin and Gaziantep are warm and workable; Kars and Van are still cool.

Pack for two climates. Layers handle Istanbul's changeable days and Cappadocia's cold nights; a light rain jacket is worth carrying everywhere except the south coast. Bring sun protection and a hat for ruins and beaches, and modest clothing for mosques — shoulders and knees covered, and a scarf for women.

April is cooler and greener with tulips in Istanbul and fewer crowds, but more rain. June brings a warmer sea and longer days at higher prices; July and August are hot and crowded, especially inland. September is the other best month for most trips.
