Turkey in April: what to expect

April is the month Turkey switches from winter to spring. Istanbul and the Marmara come out of the wet season: expect mild, changeable days with sun and showers in the same afternoon, and a cold wind off the Bosphorus on some mornings. Central Anatolia warms quickly in the sun but the plateau is high, so Cappadocia still drops close to freezing at night and balloon flights are cancelled when wind or rain moves in.

The Aegean and Mediterranean coasts are pleasant by day and still cool after dark; the sea has not caught up, so swimming is for the hardy. The Black Sea stays wet — Trabzon and the Kaçkar highlands are for green valleys and rain gear, not beaches. The east and south-east (Kars, Van, Mardin, Şanlıurfa) is comfortable and dry, though mountain roads can still see late snow.

Daylight is generous by the end of the month, which matters: Ephesus, Pamukkale and the Cappadocia valleys are far more comfortable before 11:00 and after 16:00 than in June.

April sits in the middle band: busier than March, quieter than May, and much quieter than July. Istanbul's headline sights — Hagia Sophia, Topkapı, the Basilica Cistern — have queues most of the year, so go at opening. Elsewhere the advantage is real: Ephesus, Pamukkale, Aphrodisias and the Lycian Way are comfortable, and small Aegean and Mediterranean hotels are still on shoulder-season rates.

Prices are medium: below June–August, above winter. Coastal resorts from Bodrum to Alanya are waking up, so confirm that a specific hotel or beach club is open before booking. Two practical notes: domestic flights and intercity buses can sell out around the 23 April public holiday, and Cappadocia balloon seats are limited and weather-dependent, so book the first morning of your stay rather than the last.

The month's anchor is 23 April, National Sovereignty and Children's Day, a public holiday with parades and school performances. Domestic travel demand rises around it, so book transport and Cappadocia hotels early and check dates for your year.

Istanbul's tulip plantings usually run through April, with mass beds in parks and along the Bosphorus — free, and busiest at weekends (dates check). Western Easter brings European visitors to the coast and to Istanbul; Orthodox Easter usually falls on a different week, so check both dates for your year. Ramazan Bayramı fell in March in 2027, so April is clear of the big religious holiday — confirm for later years, since the lunar calendar moves about eleven days earlier each year.

Anzac Day, 25 April, draws Australians and New Zealanders to Gallipoli for the dawn service; access to the peninsula can be restricted around it and accommodation in Çanakkale, Eceabat and Gelibolu books out early (check).

Istanbul is the easy first stop: four nights covers the historic peninsula, a Bosphorus ferry and one day trip. Cappadocia is at its greenest, with good walking in the valleys and balloon flights when the wind allows — bring a warm layer for dawn. The Aegean is the strongest April region overall: Ephesus, Selçuk, Bergama, Aphrodisias and Pamukkale are all comfortable, and the coast towns are quiet.

On the Mediterranean, Antalya, Kaş, Fethiye and the Lycian Way are excellent for hiking, with warm days and empty trails; swimming waits until May. The Black Sea suits travellers who accept rain: Trabzon, the Sumela monastery area and the Kaçkar valleys are lush, but the high yayla plateaus are usually still snowbound. In the south-east, Mardin, Şanlıurfa and Gaziantep are dry and mild — good food cities before the summer heat.

If you have ten days, the classic April shape is Istanbul, a flight to Cappadocia, then a flight to İzmir or Antalya and a slow drive along the coast.

Don't plan a beach holiday. The sea is still cold on both coasts, and some resort hotels and beach clubs are still closed or on limited hours — check before booking a specific property. Don't leave Cappadocia ballooning to your last morning: April wind and rain cancel flights, and a spare day is your insurance.

Don't travel domestically around 23 April without a booked ticket, and check Gallipoli access if you plan to be there near Anzac Day. In the east, high mountain passes can still close after late snow — check road status if you are driving to Kars or Van. Finally, don't treat April as reliably dry: a light waterproof layer earns its place in every region except the south-east.

Pack for two seasons in one day. Mornings and evenings are cool everywhere, Cappadocia nights are cold, and afternoons on the Aegean and Mediterranean can be warm. Layers, a compact rain shell and comfortable broken-in shoes for ruins and cobblestones cover most of it. Add a scarf or light hat for mosque visits in Istanbul, sun protection for the coast, and a modest layer for conservative towns in the south-east.

For Cappadocia, add a warm mid-layer and gloves for a dawn balloon flight, plus a power bank for long days out. If you are walking any part of the Lycian Way, bring proper shoes and a water filter or refill bottle.

March is cooler and wetter, with Ramazan Bayramı in some years and lower prices. May is warmer and busier, with a swimmable sea in the south by late month but the Kurban Bayramı and 19 May holiday crowding transport in 2027 — check dates. June brings reliable beach weather and the start of high-season prices. If your dates are flexible, compare April with May and September, the two easiest windows for most trips.
