Trondheim is Norway's oldest major city and the country's student and cathedral town, built inside a bend of the Nidelva where it meets the Trondheimsfjord. The centre is compact and walkable, so a single full day covers the cathedral, the old wharves and Bakklandet; a second day adds the Bymarka forest, the tram and Munkholmen. It sits on the Dovre line between Oslo and the north, which makes it a natural stop rather than a destination in itself.

Getting around

The centre is compact and walkable; buses (AtB) cover the rest, and the Gråkallbanen tram runs from St. Olavs gate up to Lian in Bymarka. Buy tickets in the AtB app before boarding — city buses often do not sell on board, and a ticket must be valid when you step on. Bicycle sharing and e-bikes are common given the hills.

Safety

Trondheim is calm and safe by big-city standards; the real issues are rain, wind, steep icy pavements in winter and strict bus-ticket checks.
  • Rain and wind most weeks of the year: bring a waterproof jacket even in summer.
  • Buy your AtB ticket before boarding; ticket checks are strict and fines apply.
  • Do not buy a student ticket without proof of enrolment.
  • Munkholmen boat is cash only and runs May–September; check the last return.
  • Parking in the centre is easy but expensive; tolls are automatic on the E6.
