How to get to Thailand: airports, flights and border crossings

Fly into Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK) for the widest choice of long-haul flights and the cheapest onward connections; use Phuket (HKT) or Chiang Mai (CNX) only if your first stop is there. Land borders work from Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar; check your entry rules before booking.

Step by step

Start with the decision, not the fare. If your trip is Bangkok plus one region, book into BKK and take a cheap domestic hop. If your whole trip is one coast or the north, a direct international flight to HKT or CNX can save a day and a transfer.

For most first trips, BKK is the right answer. It has the most non-stop long-haul routes, the most competition on price, and the densest domestic network for onward legs to Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabi, Samui and Udon Thani. Don Mueang (DMK) is a separate airport used mainly by low-cost carriers; if you connect between BKK and DMK, allow at least three hours and treat it as a city transfer, not an airport connection.

Book the long-haul leg first, then the domestic leg. Domestic fares on Thai carriers are cheap if booked early and rise sharply in high season and around holidays. If you are heading to an island, remember the last leg is often a bus and ferry, not a flight: Phuket, Krabi and Surat Thani are the usual air gateways for the Andaman and Gulf islands.

Overland entry is realistic from Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar. The busiest crossings are Sadao and Padang Besar from Malaysia, Nong Khai and Chiang Khong from Laos, Aranyaprathet from Cambodia, and Mae Sot and Mae Sai from Myanmar. Buses, trains and minivans run on all of these, but hours, visa rules and the number of entries allowed per year vary by crossing and passport, so check before you commit to a land route.

Finally, sort the paperwork before the flight: passport validity, visa or exemption, proof of onward travel if asked, and travel insurance that covers the activities you plan.

Notes

Airport transfers in Bangkok are simple: the Airport Rail Link from BKK runs to Phaya Thai, and metered taxis and ride-hailing apps cover the rest. From DMK there is no rail link; use a taxi or the bus.

If you arrive on a late flight, book one night near the airport or in the city rather than pushing straight to an island. The first ferry of the day is usually the reliable one.

Land borders can close early, change visa rules with little notice, and get busy before holidays. Carry cash in baht for border fees and transport, and keep your entry stamp and departure card safe.

Schedules, fares and entry rules all move. Verify with the airline, the Thai embassy or consulate for your passport, and the official immigration site before you travel.

Questions people ask

What is the best airport to fly into for Thailand?

Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK) for most travelers: the most long-haul routes, the cheapest fares and the best onward connections. Choose Phuket (HKT) or Chiang Mai (CNX) only if that is your first stop and a direct flight exists.

How long is the flight to Thailand from the US, UK, Canada, Australia and NZ?

Roughly 17–20 h from the US west coast with one stop, 11–13 h non-stop from London, 13–16 h from Canada with a stop, 9–10 h from Sydney or Melbourne, and 11–13 h from Auckland. Times are 2026 estimates; check your route.

Can I enter Thailand by land or sea?

Yes. Land crossings from Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar are common, and cruise ships and ferries arrive at Phuket and other ports. Rules, hours and the number of entries allowed vary by crossing and passport, so check before you go.

Do I need a visa to enter Thailand?

Many passports, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland, enter under a visa exemption, but length and conditions change. Check the Thai embassy or official immigration site for your passport before booking.

Which Bangkok airport should I use, BKK or DMK?

Use BKK for long-haul and most international flights. DMK handles mainly low-cost and regional carriers. They are separate airports, so allow at least three hours if you connect between them.

When is the cheapest time to fly to Thailand?

Shoulder months such as May to June and September to October usually have the lowest long-haul fares. High season, November to February, plus Songkran in April and New Year, is the most expensive and busiest.
