Where to stay in Thailand: best areas and types of hotel

Thailand rewards a two-base trip over a five-base one. The parent country plan is 3–4 nights in Bangkok as the air hub, then 4–6 nights north or south. Where you sleep inside each base matters more than which base you pick, because traffic and boat timetables decide how much of the day you actually get.

In Bangkok, the riverside and Rattanakosin area puts the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and the river boats within walking distance, which saves an hour of traffic each way. Sukhumvit and Siam put you on the BTS and MRT for malls, food and airport links. Khao San suits late-night arrivals and budget rooms, not early temple starts.

In Chiang Mai, the old city is walkable to temples and Sunday markets; Nimman is cafés, condos and a younger crowd; the riverside is quieter with more space. On the Andaman coast, Phuket and Krabi split into beach towns with different noise levels, and the Gulf islands run on their own season.

Thai accommodation runs from fan rooms in wooden guesthouses to pool villas, and the price gap is wide. A fan double with a shared or cold-water bathroom is the budget floor. Add air conditioning, a private hot shower and a location near transport and you are in the mid-range. Resorts add a pool, breakfast and often a shuttle.

Prices swing hard by season and location. The bands below are 2026 estimates for a double room per night, and island high season can push the top of each band higher. Always confirm whether the rate includes breakfast, tax and service charge, and whether air conditioning costs extra, which is common in budget places.

Bangkok and Chiang Mai have deep room supply, so 1–2 weeks ahead is usually enough outside holidays. Beach and island rooms are the constraint: Nov–Apr on the Andaman coast and Feb–Sep in the Gulf are the dry windows, and the best-value mid-range places sell out first. Book those 4–8 weeks ahead, and earlier for mid-December to mid-January, Songkran in mid-April, and long Thai holiday weekends.

Shoulder months are the trade: cheaper rooms, more rain, and some boat services on reduced timetables. Check the season for your specific coast before you lock dates, since the two coasts do not share a dry season.

For a one-night stop such as Ayutthaya or Sukhothai, book ahead anyway; the good small guesthouses there are few.

Location beats room quality on a short trip. A plain room 5 minutes from a BTS station or a river pier is worth more than a nicer room 40 minutes out, because Bangkok traffic eats the difference. On islands, check how far the room is from the pier and whether the road is paved; a '10-minute walk to the beach' can mean a steep track.

Read the fine print on deposits. Many places hold a cash deposit or keep a copy of your passport rather than the passport itself; you should not hand over your passport as security. Check the cancellation window, since island bookings often require prepayment.

Two things to sort before you arrive: a Thai SIM or eSIM so you can call the guesthouse, and travel insurance that covers the activities you plan, including scooter riding, which is a common claim and often excluded by default.
