Taree

Stop one night on the Pacific Highway drive, or skip: Taree is a service town with a gallery, a river and Old Bar beach 18 km (11 mi) east.

Taree sits on the Manning River on the Mid-North Coast, about 3.5 hours' drive north of Sydney and roughly halfway to Port Macquarie. The freeway now bypasses the centre, so it is quieter than it was, and it works as a one-night break on a coastal drive rather than a destination in itself. Old Bar, 18 km east, has the beach and most of the holiday accommodation.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: the centre is walkable but Old Bar, the airport and the oyster farms are not. Taree station is about a 10-minute walk from the centre and sits on the NSW TrainLink Sydney–Brisbane line. Local buses are limited; check timetables before relying on them.

Watch out

Safety

Taree is a quiet country town and feels safe by day. The real risks are driving distances after dark, wildlife on rural roads at dawn and dusk, and summer heat or river flooding.
  • Distances between the town, Old Bar and the oyster farms are driving distances, not walking ones.
  • Some oyster-farm tours are by appointment only: book before you drive out.
  • Summer can bring heavy rain and river flooding on the Manning; check road conditions before driving in wet weather.
  • Fuel and food options thin out quickly once you leave the highway.
