The honest verdict

South Tarawa is a chain of narrow islets joined by causeways, with one main road from Betio in the west to Bonriki and the airport in the east, about 35 km. Around 60,000 people live on it, water is scarce, cash rules and the flight timetable decides the trip. Four clusters cover a first visit; a driver or a minibus joins them.
