Everything the tour says, in order. Read it instead of listening if you prefer.

  1. Before you start

Welcome to the Bikenibeu: shops & lagoon shore audio walk in South Tarawa. 3 stops: Bikenibeu shops and market stalls, Bikenibeu lagoon shore and North Tarawa by boat. Evening cluster in the east: the shops, roadside eateries and the lagoon shore; take a car back after dark.

Bikenibeu's main road, shops and lagoon shore (approximate box; the islet is narrow). Underfoot: road edge, coral sand; slope: flat; shade: low.

South Tarawa is a strip of coral about 35 km long and often only a few hundred metres wide, with the ocean on one side and a lagoon on the other. It is the capital of Kiribati, the place where a famous Pacific battle was fought in 1943, and a town of roughly 60,000 people living close to sea level.

Before you start: The road has no lighting in places: ride, do not walk, after dark. Ask before photographing people. Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.

  2. 1. Bikenibeu shops and market stalls

    Bikenibeu

    Look for

    • Small shops on the main road
    • Roadside stalls
    • Roadside stalls

Stop 1 of 3: Bikenibeu shops and market stalls. Locally, Bikenibeu.

A daytime look at everyday shopping in the east: small shops, roadside stalls and prices; go in the morning, carry small notes and keep valuables out of sight.

Look for Small shops on the main road: Check prices and stock. Look for Roadside stalls: Fruit and snacks. For a photo: Roadside stalls, morning.

It runs from Betio in the west, past Bairiki and Bikenibeu, to the airport at Bonriki in the east, about 35 km in all. A three-day stay covers the essentials: a morning at Betio with a guide, a slow day in Bairiki with the lagoon shore and a maneaba visit if a host can arrange it, and an evening in Bikenibeu.

Ask before photographing people and stalls. Busy 09:00–12:00 and again late afternoon; quieter mid-afternoon. Allowed outdoors; ask before people, homes and government buildings. The main road has small shops for groceries, drinks and basics; stock depends on the last ship or flight.

Walk:Next, stop 2: Bikenibeu lagoon shore. It's about 16 minutes on foot, about 200 metres to the north-east. Route: Walk to the lagoon shore. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  3. 2. Bikenibeu lagoon shore

    Bikenibeu

    Look for

    • The shore and benches
    • Boats at sunset

Stop 2 of 3: Bikenibeu lagoon shore. Locally, Bikenibeu. Arrival point: Short car ride or 15-minute walk from the shops.

A quiet shore for an evening walk in the east: go at 16:30–18:00, do not swim without advice, and book the car home before dark.

Look for The shore and benches: Sit and watch the lagoon. For a photo: Boats at sunset, 17:30–18:15.

Ask before photographing people. Quiet; families and children in the late afternoon. A calm lagoon shore for a slow walk, not a swimming beach. Unlit after dark: book the ride home. Shade is scarce and the sun is hard after 10:00: bring water, a hat and sunscreen. Do not swim without advice. Go after 16:30 with a driver waiting or a booked ride home. Walk the shore and sit on a bench. Is there food nearby? Roadside eateries at the main road; see the eat page. Sandals or closed shoes.

Walk:Next, stop 3: North Tarawa by boat. It is about 16.6 km to the north-west: too far to walk, so plan a ride and check your map. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  4. 3. North Tarawa by boat

    North Tarawa

    Look for

    • Boat crossing
    • Village visit with a host
    • Lagoon and shore
    • Lagoon from the boat

Stop 3 of 3: North Tarawa by boat. Locally, North Tarawa. Arrival point: Pickup at your guesthouse, then boat or causeway from the east end (confirm access).

A full day by boat (or causeway, confirm) to quieter North Tarawa villages and the lagoon; go only with a host, agree price, life jackets and return time, and be back before dark.

Look for Boat crossing: Life jackets on. Look for Village visit with a host: Ask before photographing. Look for Lagoon and shore: Swim only where the host advises. For a photo: Lagoon from the boat, morning.

Add a day for North Tarawa by boat if the weather and your flights allow.

Ask your host before entering a village or maneaba. Very quiet; villages are small and everyone notices a visitor. Ask before people and homes. North Tarawa is quieter than the south and reached by boat or, in some places, a causeway (confirm locally).
