Everything the tour says, in order. Read it instead of listening if you prefer.

  1. Before you start

Welcome to the Bairiki: government quarter & lagoon shore audio walk in South Tarawa. 3 stops: Bairiki government quarter, Bairiki lagoon shore and A maneaba (meeting house) visit. Base cluster: the government offices, the lagoon shore and the shops; flat and walkable at the edges of the day.

Bairiki's government quarter, the main road and the lagoon shore (approximate box; the islet is narrow). Underfoot: road edge, coral sand; slope: flat; shade: low.

South Tarawa is a strip of coral about 35 km long and often only a few hundred metres wide, with the ocean on one side and a lagoon on the other. It is the capital of Kiribati, the place where a famous Pacific battle was fought in 1943, and a town of roughly 60,000 people living close to sea level.

Before you start: Ask before photographing government buildings. Dress modestly away from the water. Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.

  2. 1. Bairiki government quarter

    Bairiki

    Look for

    • Government offices along the road
    • Lagoon shore
    • The main road and lagoon in morning light

Stop 1 of 3: Bairiki government quarter. Locally, Bairiki.

A short morning walk in the seat of government and along the lagoon shore; go before 09:30, keep to the roadside and ask before taking photos.

Look for Government offices along the road: View from the road. Look for Lagoon shore: A calmer stretch. For a photo: The main road and lagoon in morning light, 07:00–09:00.

Bairiki, where you can see the government offices today, grew out of that role. It runs from Betio in the west, past Bairiki and Bikenibeu, to the airport at Bonriki in the east, about 35 km in all. A three-day stay covers the essentials: a morning at Betio with a guide, a slow day in Bairiki with the lagoon shore and a maneaba visit if a host can arrange it, and an evening in Bikenibeu.

Ask before photographing government buildings and officials. Quiet outside office hours; busy on ship and flight days. Allowed outdoors; ask before people, homes and government buildings.

Walk:Next, stop 2: Bairiki lagoon shore. It's about 8 minutes on foot, about 250 metres to the south-east. Route: Walk to the lagoon shore. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  3. 2. Bairiki lagoon shore

    Bairiki

    Look for

    • Shore road and benches
    • Lagoon edge
    • Lagoon at sunset

Stop 2 of 3: Bairiki lagoon shore. Locally, Bairiki. Arrival point: Walk from the government quarter or a short car ride.

A slow half hour on the lagoon side in the late afternoon: benches, breeze and light; keep to the road and shore and ask before photographing people.

Look for Shore road and benches: Sit and watch the light. Look for Lagoon edge: Look, do not swim. For a photo: Lagoon at sunset, 17:30–18:15.

Ask before photographing people. Quiet by day; local families and children in the late afternoon. A calm shore in the middle of South Tarawa: a place to rest and watch, not a beach for swimming. The lagoon has strong tidal currents. Ride home after dark. Do not swim without local advice: currents are strong. Go after 16:30 when the sun softens and locals come out. Walk along the shore road and sit on a bench. Are there toilets? Not at the shore; use your guesthouse before you go.

Walk:Next, stop 3: A maneaba (meeting house) visit. It's about 5 minutes on foot, about 300 metres to the west. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  4. 3. A maneaba (meeting house) visit

    Maneaba

    Look for

    • The main floor and mats
    • Conversation with your host
    • The roofline from outside

Stop 3 of 3: A maneaba (meeting house) visit. Locally, Maneaba.

Visit only by arrangement through your guesthouse or a host: the maneaba is the community meeting house, and sitting in one with permission shows more of I-Kiribati life than any sight.

Look for The main floor and mats: Sit where you are shown. Look for Conversation with your host: A chance to ask about customs. For a photo: The roofline from outside, daylight.

Social life centred on the maneaba, a big open meeting house where a clan or island gathered to decide, to feast and to settle disputes. The seating in a maneaba followed rules of descent and rank, and much of that pattern survives today, from village meetings to the national parliament, which is also called a maneaba. Life on Tarawa is organised around family, church and the maneaba.

Never enter without an invitation. Depends on the event; meetings and celebrations gather many people. Only with permission.
