How to choose, step by step
Step 1 — Set your bases. With 5-7 nights, one base in Taipei is enough; the MRT and day trips cover the north. With 9-10 nights, split Taipei (4-5) with Tainan (2-3) or Kaohsiung (2), and travel between them by high-speed rail.
Step 2 — Pick the neighbourhood inside the city. In Taipei, Taipei Main Station puts the airport MRT, the high-speed rail and the metro in one building, which saves time on arrival and departure days. Zhongshan and the area around Ximending suit travellers who want dinner and a walk after dark. In Tainan, the West Central District keeps the temples and food streets within walking distance. In Kaohsiung, Formosa Boulevard and Yancheng put you on the MRT and near the harbour.
Step 3 — Choose the type. Hotels are the default and are good value; hostels cluster in Taipei and Kaohsiung; minsu (family-run guesthouses) are common on the east coast, in the mountains and on the islands. Minsu often have quiet hours and set dinner times, so read the house rules before booking.
Step 4 — Check the practical details. Confirm whether the rate includes tax and any service charge, whether breakfast is included, and whether the room has a window — some budget city rooms do not. Check the nearest MRT exit or bus stop, not just the district name.
