Datun, Taichung: neighborhood guide

Datun (大屯), also called the Tun districts (屯區), is the collective name for Dali, Taiping, Wufeng and Wuri, the four districts strung along the southern edge of Taichung. Together they hold a large share of the city's population, but they function as suburbs rather than a destination: most residents commute or drive into central Taichung for shopping, dining and entertainment, and the visitor sights are thin on the ground for the area's size.

The four districts are not alike. Dali is flat, close to downtown and the easiest to walk around. Taiping and Wufeng run from flatland in the west into mountains in the east, so the eastern halves are reached by car or scooter. Wuri is split by the Dali River: the northern part around the high-speed rail station is straightforward, while the southern farmland and highway grid is confusing even for locals.

The practical consequence for a visitor is that Datun is a place you pass through or use for one specific purpose, not a neighbourhood you wander. If you want Taichung's street life, museums and night markets on foot, base yourself in the centre.

Stay in Datun if your trip is built around the high-speed rail. Taichung HSR station sits in Wuri, with the metro and TRA Xinwuri station attached, so a hotel here removes the transfer on the morning you leave for Taipei or Kaohsiung. It also suits travellers arriving late or leaving early, and anyone visiting the Wufeng Lin family mansion or the fibre arts museum in Dali.

Skip it for a normal Taichung stay. The centre has the food, the night markets and the walkable streets, and Datun adds a 20–40 minute trip each way whenever you want them. Buses run, but the routes are long and the mountain edges of Taiping and Wufeng need a car.

One naming trap: Wuri station (TRA) and Xinwuri station (TRA, beside the HSR and metro) are different places and are not a short walk apart. Train announcements warn about this. Book your hotel against the right one.

Food here is neighbourhood food: breakfast shops, noodle and rice stalls, hotpot and chain restaurants serving the residential blocks, plus the convenience stores and food courts around the HSR station. It is cheap and functional rather than a reason to come. For a proper Taichung food evening, take the train or bus downtown.

Around Wuri HSR station you will find the widest choice for a quick meal before a train, including sit-down chains inside the station complex. In Dali, the streets near the TRA station and along the main roads have the densest cluster of small restaurants. Wufeng's old centre around Zongzeng Road is the best bet in the eastern districts.

If you are staying for one night before an early train, eat near your hotel rather than travelling into the centre and back; the last buses thin out in the evening.

By rail, Wuri is the gateway: Taichung HSR station for high-speed trains, with the metro and TRA Xinwuri station for local services. Do not get off at Wuri station if you are heading for the HSR — it is a separate stop and not an easy walk between them.

By bus, Taichung city buses cover the area well. Routes 50, 58, 107, 131 and 200 link the TRA Taichung station with Dali and Wufeng; 81 and 74 serve Taiping, with 74 also calling at the HSR station. Routes 100, 101 and 105 are the main Wuri services, though the metro is usually simpler. Buses to Dali and Wufeng mostly leave from the TRA station, while HSR-side buses serve Wuri.

On foot, Dali and Taiping are roughly 3–4 km from central Taichung, about 30–60 minutes; the walk to Dali is straightforward, while the 74 Expressway makes the Taiping route less pleasant. Wufeng is about 10 km, around two hours. By car, the 74 Expressway links Dali, Taiping and Wufeng, and Huanhe Road links Dali and Wuri; Provincial Highway 14 connects Dali and Wufeng.
