Coast Line, Taichung: neighborhood guide

Coast Line (海線) is the western coastal strip of Taichung, made up of eight districts: Dajia, Qingshui, Shalu, Wuqi, Da'an, Dadu, Longjing and Waipu. It is not a single neighbourhood but a string of small towns along the Taiwan Railways Coast Line, separated by farmland, industrial land and the harbour area around Taichung Port.

The coast itself is the draw. Gaomei Wetlands is a tidal mudflat with a wooden boardwalk that runs out toward the water; at low tide you can walk on the wet sand at the end, and near high tide the shallow water turns into a mirror for the sky. Sunset is the reason most people come, and it is the busiest hour of the day here.

Elsewhere the area is ordinary and local: a major Mazu temple in Dajia, a fishing port with a seafood market in Wuqi, an outlet mall near the port, and the Taichung Aquarium in Qingshui. Expect low-rise streets, scooters, and few English signs outside the main sights.

Stay in Coast Line if you want to see Gaomei Wetlands at sunset without a two-hour trip back to the city afterwards, or if you are driving and treating the coast as a stop between Taichung and Miaoli or Hsinchu. One night is usually enough.

Do not stay here as your Taichung base. The districts are spread out, buses run roughly hourly on the routes that matter, and there is little to do after dark beyond a night market or the outlet mall. Central Taichung has the train and bus hub, the museums and the food streets, and it is the better base for a first trip.

A middle option: keep your hotel in Central Taichung and take the train out for an afternoon and evening, accepting that the last bus from Gaomei may be around 19:30 and that a taxi back to the city is the fallback.

The TRA Coast Line train links the coastal towns and connects to Taichung station in the city. From Central Taichung, take a local train toward Dajia or Qingshui, then a bus for the wetlands; the whole trip is commonly about 1.5–2 hours each way, depending on connections.

For Gaomei Wetlands, bus 178 ends near the dock on the north side and bus 309 ends near the No. 18 Windmill on the south side. Both run at long intervals, roughly hourly, and the last 309 from the windmill stop is around 19:30. Bus 309 or 688 also links the wetlands and Wuqi Fishing Port in about 25 minutes for around NT$20.

A car or a taxi makes the coast far easier: the sights are 5–15 km apart and buses between them are sparse. Taxis are metered; from Central Taichung expect a substantial fare and 40–60 minutes depending on traffic. Bicycles can be rented near some coastal spots, but the roads between districts are not pleasant to ride.

Check train and bus times on the day: schedules change on weekends and holidays, and the boardwalk at Gaomei can close early at high tide.
