Strumica is a small agricultural city in the far southeast, near the Bulgarian and Greek borders, with a walkable centre, a lively café strip and an unusual cluster of monasteries and spa ruins in its villages. It is not a headline destination, but it is a comfortable, cheap base for a day or two if you are crossing the region or heading to the Belasica mountains.

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk: square to park is about 10 minutes. For the monasteries, Bansko and the waterfalls you need a car, taxi or an organised tour; local buses run to some villages but are slow and infrequent.

Watch out

Safety

Strumica is a calm small city and feels safe day and night; the real issues are unlit village roads, stray dogs in the countryside and summer heat.
  • Village sites have no fixed opening hours; some churches and the Orta Mosque can only be seen from outside — check locally before going.
  • The Bansko spa ruins are an open archaeological site, not a working bath complex; do not expect facilities.
  • Mountain roads towards Belasica and the waterfalls are narrow; avoid them after heavy rain.
  • Carry some cash: smaller village places may not take cards.
