Stroud

Stop for 2–3 hours on The Bucketts Way, or sleep one night if you are heading to Gloucester Tops; there is no reason to stay two.

Stroud is a 900-person town on The Bucketts Way, 35 km inland from the coast and about an hour north of Newcastle. Its one real sight is a small courthouse museum; most travellers use it as a fuel, food and toilet break between the Pacific Highway and Gloucester, or as a bed before the Gloucester Tops section of Barrington Tops National Park. Two cafés on Cowper Street cover breakfast and lunch, and that is the whole town.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around

You need a car. The town is a short strip along Cowper Street and you can walk it in 10 minutes. The Bucketts Way (Tourist Drive 2) is the only road in and out; the speed limit is 90 km/h and the surface takes potholes after rain. No train station: the nearest are Dungog and Gloucester, both a drive away.

The only real choice: walk to both cafés and the museum. A handful of motel and pub rooms; book ahead in school holidays.

Gloucester (25 km north)

More beds, a supermarket and a hospital; use it if Stroud is full.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime country town; the real risks are the drive in (potholes, wildlife at dusk, the Pacific Highway merge), summer heat and thin mobile coverage on the back roads.
  • The Bucketts Way is potholed after heavy rain and repairs take months: drive it in daylight, not after dark.
  • Joining the Pacific Highway southbound means crossing traffic at 100 km/h (62 mph) with no grade-separated interchange: wait for a clear gap.
  • Fuel and food are limited; the last reliable supermarket is in Gloucester or Raymond Terrace.
  • Mobile coverage is patchy on the back roads towards Gloucester Tops.
