Stroud
Stop for 2–3 hours on The Bucketts Way, or sleep one night if you are heading to Gloucester Tops; there is no reason to stay two.
Stroud is a 900-person town on The Bucketts Way, 35 km inland from the coast and about an hour north of Newcastle. Its one real sight is a small courthouse museum; most travellers use it as a fuel, food and toilet break between the Pacific Highway and Gloucester, or as a bed before the Gloucester Tops section of Barrington Tops National Park. Two cafés on Cowper Street cover breakfast and lunch, and that is the whole town.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- The Bucketts Way is potholed after heavy rain and repairs take months: drive it in daylight, not after dark.
- Joining the Pacific Highway southbound means crossing traffic at 100 km/h with no grade-separated interchange: wait for a clear gap.
- Fuel and food are limited; the last reliable supermarket is in Gloucester or Raymond Terrace.
- Mobile coverage is patchy on the back roads towards Gloucester Tops.
A quiet, low-crime country town; the real risks are the drive in (potholes, wildlife at dusk, the Pacific Highway merge), summer heat and thin mobile coverage on the back roads.
