Split's season is short and sharp. The old town, the Riva and the ferries to the islands fill from mid-June to early September, then empty quickly. April and October are mild and quiet but the sea is cold for most swimmers; May, June and September are the compromise most travellers want.
July and August are hot and crowded, with the highest room rates of the year. If those are your only dates, plan around the heat: Diocletian's Palace and the Riva before 10:00, a long lunch, the beach or a boat in the afternoon.

Weather and sea temperature
Summers are hot and mostly dry, winters mild and wet. The bura, a cold gusty north-easterly, blows mainly in winter and can stop catamarans for a day or more; the jugo brings warm, damp, cloudy spells. Both are normal and rarely last long.
The sea is the reason most people come. It reaches roughly 23–26 °C in July–September, which is comfortable for long swims; in April it is around 16 °C, fine for a quick dip and not much more. Beaches near Split are mostly pebble and concrete platforms rather than sand.

Crowds and costs
Crowds track the cruise ships and the school holidays. On a heavy ship day the Riva and the palace cellars are packed between about 10:00 and 16:00; mornings and evenings are calmer. July and August also bring domestic and Italian holiday traffic, and 15 August is the single busiest date on the coast.
Prices follow the same curve. Rooms and tours cost most in July and August, drop in June and September, and fall further in April, May and October. Ferries run year-round but with fewer departures outside summer, so shoulder-season trips need a timetable check rather than a guess.

Croatian public holidays matter mainly because they fill the coast with domestic visitors. The two August dates — 5 August and 15 August — are the peak of the peak, with ferries, roads and rooms full. Easter decides when many coastal hotels open for the year, and Good Friday brings the Za Križen procession on Hvar.
