Southeastern Albania is the inland south: the border lakes, the Vjosa valley and the stone towns of Korçë, Gjirokastër, Berat and Përmet. Distances look short on the map but the roads are mountain roads, so two bases with day-trips beat a new hotel every night. Sleep in Korçë for the lakes and the high plateau, in Gjirokastër for the Drino valley and the Greek border, and treat Berat, Përmet and Tepelenë as day-trips or one-night stops.

- The highest part of the region: cold winters with snow, mild summers. Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa moderate the heat.
- Drino and Vjosa valleys
- Warmer and drier than the plateau; July and August afternoons are hot, so hike and drive in the morning.
May, June, September and October are the comfortable months. July and August are hot in the valleys and busy at the lakes.
