Shepparton
Give Shepparton one night as a Goulburn Valley stop between Melbourne and the Murray, or a day trip for the lake, the tower view and the fruit outlets.
Shepparton is the main town of the Goulburn Valley, about 175 km north of Melbourne on the M39, and the centre of Victoria's fruit-growing country. It is flat, quiet and practical rather than scenic: a lake with a walking and cycling path, a small mall with an observation tower, a children's playground between town and Mooroopna, and cheap factory-outlet fruit. Most travellers use it as a half-day stop or one night on the way to Echuca, Yarrawonga or the Murray, not as a destination in itself.

- Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
- Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
- Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
- Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
- Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
- Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
- Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around
The town is small and flat, so walking and cycling work for the centre and the lake. Buses run roughly hourly on weekdays, less on Saturday and not at all on Sunday, so a car or taxi covers the rest. Bikes can be hired locally. Taxis are the fallback for evenings.

Maude St Mall and central Shepparton
Walk to the mall, cafés and the tower; motels and the larger hotels sit on or near Wyndham St.

Quieter, with the lake path at the door; a short drive or 20–25 min walk to the mall.
Mooroopna side (Midland Highway)
Cheaper motels and caravan parks between the two towns; you need a car for everything.

Tap water is safe to drink in town, but some older motels have a strong chlorine or bore-water taste: bottled water is cheap at any supermarket.
