Shepparton is the main town of the Goulburn Valley, about 175 km north of Melbourne on the M39, and the centre of Victoria's fruit-growing country. It is flat, quiet and practical rather than scenic: a lake with a walking and cycling path, a small mall with an observation tower, a children's playground between town and Mooroopna, and cheap factory-outlet fruit. Most travellers use it as a half-day stop or one night on the way to Echuca, Yarrawonga or the Murray, not as a destination in itself.

The town is small and flat, so walking and cycling work for the centre and the lake. Buses run roughly hourly on weekdays, less on Saturday and not at all on Sunday, so a car or taxi covers the rest. Bikes can be hired locally. Taxis are the fallback for evenings.
