Shanghai in May: what to expect

May sits at the end of Shanghai's mild spring and before the plum rain (meiyu) that soaks the Yangtze delta from roughly mid-June to mid-July. Days are warm rather than hot, humidity is climbing but not yet oppressive, and evenings stay pleasant enough for the Bund after dark.

The month is not dry. Expect a handful of showery days, sometimes a heavy afternoon thunderstorm, and grey spells that clear within a day. Sunshine hours are decent but not guaranteed; build one indoor option into each day.

Daylight is generous, which matters for sightseeing: you can start early and still have light for a river cruise or a rooftop view in the evening.

The single fact that shapes a May trip is the 1–5 May Labour Day holiday. Domestic travel surges, high-speed rail seats between major cities sell out, and hotel rates in Shanghai jump. The Bund, Yu Garden, Nanjing Road and the main museums are at their worst in those five days.

From about 6 May the city returns to normal working rhythm. Weekends are busier than weekdays, and the big sights stay popular, but queues shorten and hotel prices settle to mid-range levels. Late May is the sweet spot: warm weather, manageable crowds, and no national holiday until Dragon Boat in June.

Book high-speed rail and any popular museum slot a few days ahead, and use weekday mornings for the classic sights.

The month's calendar is dominated by the Labour Day holiday at the start. Expect crowds, holiday transport pressure and some adjusted opening hours around 1–5 May rather than a single ticketed event.

Beyond the holiday, Shanghai's cultural calendar is steady rather than seasonal: museums, galleries and theatres run year-round programmes, and spring is a popular slot for exhibitions and concerts. Specific dates change every year, so check listings close to your trip.

Dragon Boat Festival falls in June in most years, so late May is a quiet window between the two holiday peaks.

May suits the classic Shanghai circuit: the Bund and its riverside walk, the former French Concession lanes, Yu Garden and the old town, and the Pudong skyline viewpoints. Warm evenings make the waterfront and rooftop bars work well.

It is also a strong month for day trips in the Yangtze delta. Suzhou's gardens and canals, Hangzhou's West Lake and the water towns around the delta are all within a couple of hours by high-speed rail, and spring greenery is still fresh before summer heat sets in.

If you want a longer loop, May is one of the better months for East China generally, and it links naturally with Beijing by high-speed rail.

Pack for a warm spring with rain: light layers you can add at night, a compact umbrella or light rain shell, and shoes you can walk in for hours. A light jacket covers the cooler evenings early in the month.

Sun protection is worth carrying even on cloudy days, and a refillable bottle helps in a city where bottled water is the norm for visitors. If you use a VPN or travel apps, sort them before you fly — they cannot be fixed at the airport.

April is cooler and greener, with the Qingming break early in the month; it is a good shoulder option if you want fewer people. June brings the plum rain and rising heat, so expect wetter, stickier days.

July is hot, wet and in school holidays, which makes it the weakest of the summer months for a city trip. If you are flexible, late May and September are the two best windows around this one.
