Shanghai in April: what to expect

April sits at the front of Shanghai's best stretch. The damp cold of winter is gone, the plum rain (meiyu) has not started, and the summer heat is still two months away. Days are mild enough for a jacket over a shirt, and evenings still need a layer.

The month is changeable rather than wet. Expect roughly 10–12 days with some rain, often short showers or drizzle rather than all-day downpours, and about 5–6 hours of sunshine a day. Humidity climbs through the month, and a few days can feel warm and sticky by late April. Air quality is usually better than in winter, but spring can still bring hazy days.

Daylight runs from about 12.5 hours at the start of the month to 13.5 by the end, so late-afternoon walks along the Bund or through the former French Concession are easy to fit in.

April is medium season in Shanghai: busy enough that you should book the big sights and rail tickets ahead, quiet enough that most places are manageable on a weekday. The exception is the Qingming Festival break in early April, when domestic travellers fill trains, hotels and the main sights for three days.

The second pressure point is the end of the month. The 1–5 May holiday is one of China's biggest travel periods, and hotels and flights start filling and pricing up in the last days of April. If your dates are flexible, aim for the first three weeks and treat 29–30 April as a soft peak.

Prices are mid-range by Shanghai standards. Expect hotel rates to jump noticeably on Qingming weekend and again from about 29 April; metro fares, museum tickets and most restaurant bills stay flat all month.

Qingming Festival (Tomb-Sweeping Day) falls in early April and is a public holiday. It is a family occasion rather than a visitor event: cemeteries and suburban roads are busy, some smaller shops close, and long-distance transport sells out. Check the exact dates each year, since the holiday moves with the lunar calendar.

Spring is also the season for Shanghai's gardens and parks. Blooms peak in April at the city's classical gardens and in the parks around the former French Concession, and the Shanghai Botanical Garden is at its busiest. Dates shift with the weather, so check locally.

The cultural calendar is full but dates change year to year: theatre, symphony and art exhibitions run through spring, and the Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix has been held at the Shanghai International Circuit in spring in recent years — confirm the 2026 date before planning around it.

April is the month to spend time outdoors. The Bund and the riverside promenade in Pudong are comfortable at any hour, and the plane-tree streets of the former French Concession are at their best before the summer humidity arrives. Yu Garden and the surrounding old town are pleasant early on a weekday, before the Qingming crowds.

Use Shanghai as a base for the wider Yangtze delta, which is also at its best in April. Suzhou's classical gardens and Hangzhou's West Lake are both within a couple of hours by high-speed rail and make easy day trips or one-night stops. Book rail seats ahead around Qingming and the May holiday.

Pack for a mild, changeable month rather than a hot one. Layers work better than a single heavy coat: a T-shirt or light shirt for the middle of the day, a light jacket or cardigan for mornings and evenings, and a compact umbrella or rain shell for the showery days.

Comfortable walking shoes matter more than anything else — Shanghai rewards long walks, and April is the month to do them. Add sunscreen and sunglasses for the brighter days, and a small day bag you can keep zipped in crowds.

If you plan day trips to Suzhou or Hangzhou, the same layers work; both cities run a degree or two cooler at night. Check the forecast a few days out, since late-April warm spells can arrive quickly.

March is cooler and less predictable, with more wind and a higher chance of grey days, but it is quieter and cheaper. May is warmer and clearer, but the 1–5 May holiday makes the first week crowded and expensive; from the 6th it settles down. June brings the plum rain and the start of the summer heat.
