Putuo, Shanghai: neighborhood guide

Putuo sits northwest of the centre, on the north bank of Suzhou Creek. It is a residential and light-industrial district rather than a sightseeing one: apartment blocks, wet markets, schools, a few temples and the old factory yards along the creek that now hold studios and galleries. The streets are quieter than Jing'an or Huangpu and prices for food and rooms are lower.

The two anchors for visitors are the Jade Buddha Temple, near Changshou Road in the southeast corner, and the M50 art district on Moganshan Road along the creek. Zhenru Temple and the Yuan-dynasty sluice gate museum sit further west and north, in the more ordinary parts of the district where you will hear little English.

Putuo is not a place you cross town to see. It works as a base if your hotel is close to a metro station and you are happy to ride 20–40 minutes to the main sights, or if you have already done the classic Shanghai stops and want a calmer, cheaper week.

Choose Putuo for value. Hotel rates run below Jing'an, Huangpu and the French Concession, and you can often get a larger room for the same money. The trade-off is time: the Bund, Yu Garden and the old city are a metro ride away, and some Putuo sights themselves need a bus or a taxi from the station.

Skip Putuo on a first trip of two or three nights. With that little time you want to walk out of your door into the sights, which means Huangpu, Jing'an or the French Concession. Putuo also suits travellers using Shanghai West Station, or repeat visitors who want a local neighbourhood rather than a hotel strip.

Within the district, the southeast around Changshou Road (line 7) is the most convenient for visitors: Jade Buddha Temple is walkable, and line 7 runs straight into the centre. The area around Zhenru and Shanghai West is cheaper but more isolated, and taxis can be scarce outside some stations.

Putuo eats local and cheap. Around Changshou Road and the Jade Buddha Temple there are vegetarian restaurants serving the temple crowd, noodle and dumpling shops, and small Shanghainese places doing breakfast congee, soy milk and steamed buns. The temple itself has simple food service, including steamed dumplings.

Near M50 and along Suzhou Creek you will find cafés and a few Western-leaning kitchens aimed at gallery visitors, though the strip is small. Around Zhenru and the residential blocks, expect neighbourhood restaurants with picture menus or no menu in English; pointing works. Supermarkets and convenience stores are everywhere for self-catering.

For a serious food evening, ride into Jing'an or Huangpu. Putuo is a place to eat well and cheaply near your hotel, not a dining destination.

Metro line 7 is the most useful line for visitors: Changshou Road station puts you in the south of the district near Jade Buddha Temple, and the line continues to Xincun Road in the north. Lines 3, 4 and 11 meet at Caoyang Road, and line 11 runs further into the district and serves Shanghai West Station. Line 13 also extends into Putuo.

Buses fill the gaps. Bus 947 runs from Zhongshan Park metro through the main points of the district, 837 from Shanghai Railway Station, 827 from Beixinjing and Shuicheng Road, 876 from Songhong Road and Caoyang Road, and 807 from Hongqiao airport. Changzhen line 1 links Shanghai West and Qilianshan Road stations.

Shanghai West Station is in the district but has only a few daily trains, and you cannot buy a ticket for travel to another Shanghai station; use the metro or a bus instead. Outside some outer stations taxis are hard to find, so plan the last leg before you arrive. Fares on the metro are distance-based and paid with the Shanghai transit card or a phone app (2026 estimate, check).
