Changning, Shanghai: neighborhood guide

Changning covers the west side of Shanghai, between Jing'an and the Hongqiao transport hub. It is mostly residential: apartment blocks, international schools, office towers and a string of large malls, with pockets of older lane housing and a former industrial quarter turned into galleries and cafés. Few travellers come here for sights alone; they come because it is calm, well connected and cheaper than the centre.

The district's two anchors are Hongqiao — airport and railway station, the busiest rail interchange in the city — and Zhongshan Park, where metro lines 2, 3 and 4 meet under a shopping complex. Line 2 runs east–west from the airport through the centre, and line 10 runs roughly parallel a little to the south. Lines 3, 4 and 15 cross the eastern half north–south.

Yes, if your trip leans on Hongqiao: an early flight, a high-speed train to Hangzhou, Suzhou or Beijing, or a work base in the western business parks. You get a quieter neighbourhood, supermarkets and everyday restaurants, and a metro ride to the centre instead of a walk.

No, if this is a first visit and you want the postcard Shanghai. The Bund, Yu Garden and the Old City sit across the river or a long metro ride east, and the French Concession lanes are a 20–30 minute ride away. Families with young children are the exception: Shanghai Zoo and the big parks make Changning a practical base.

A middle option is to split your stay — two nights near the Bund for sightseeing, then move west before an early departure.

Food here is everyday Shanghai rather than destination dining. The upper floors of Cloud Nine at Zhongshan Park hold a dense cluster of restaurants, popular with locals and mostly with picture menus; the basement has a supermarket and fast food. Brilliance West Mall, near Beixinjing on line 2, adds clothing shops, restaurants and a supermarket. APITA at Maotai Road and Loushanguan Road pairs a Japanese-style supermarket with restaurants, open 10:00–22:00.

For cheaper meals, look along the side streets off Panyu Road and around the older housing estates, where noodle shops, dumpling counters and small Sichuan places serve office workers at lunch. Expect Chinese menus with some English; pointing works. Tipping is not expected.

Zhongshan Park station is the hub: lines 2, 3 and 4 meet there, with a mall and the park above. Line 2 goes east to Jing'an, People's Square and the Bund side, and west to Hongqiao Airport and Hongqiao Railway Station. Line 10 covers the southern part of the district, including Shanghai Zoo, and also reaches both Hongqiao terminals. Lines 3, 4 and 15 run north–south through the east of the district.

From Hongqiao Railway Station, high-speed trains reach Hangzhou, Suzhou, Nanjing and Beijing; the airport handles mostly domestic flights. Allow time for the walk between metro and rail concourses, and note that both are a long way from the Bund — a taxi across town can take an hour in traffic. Use Alipay or WeChat Pay for metro gates and taxis; cash works but is slower.

Shanghai Zoo is the district's main attraction, with giant pandas and a large, walkable layout; entry is ¥40, and children under 1.2 m go free with a paying adult. Summer hours run 06:30–17:30, winter 06:30–16:30 (check). Reach it on metro line 10.

Zhongshan Park, laid out in 1914 and renamed for Sun Yat-sen, is a pleasant green break beside the metro hub. Red Town on Huaihai West Road, a former steel factory, now holds galleries, sculpture and cafés, near Hongqiao Road station on lines 3, 4 and 10. The László Hudec Memorial Hall on Panyu Road shows the house of the architect behind many of Shanghai's best-known buildings; it is free, closed Mondays, with limited afternoon hours (check). Happiness Alley, off Panyu Road, is a small lane with cafés and a pond if you are passing.
