Jiading, Shanghai: neighborhood guide

Jiading is a suburban district on Shanghai's northern edge, about 30 km from the Bund. It was a separate walled city until the 1950s, and the old core still shows that: a moat ring, a Confucius temple, old streets with canals and bridges, and a small tourist bazaar that costs nothing to walk through.

The district is really several separate places. Jiading Town (North Jiading on the metro) is the historic centre. Nanxiang, closer in, is a residential area with its own old town and the garden and temple cluster around it. Anting is the car town, home to the Shanghai Auto Museum and the Formula One circuit. Between them are apartment blocks, industrial parks, vineyards and farmland.

Expect a local, everyday Shanghai rather than a sightseeing district. English is thinner than downtown, streets are quieter at night, and the main reasons to come are gardens, the auto museum and race weekends.

Stay if you are in Shanghai for a race at Shanghai International Circuit, if you want a cheaper room for a longer stay, or if you have already done the central sights and want gardens and old streets without crowds. Families with a car or a taste for quiet do well here.

Do not stay if this is your first Shanghai trip. The Bund, the museums, the French Concession and most restaurants are 45–70 minutes away by metro, and the last trains back run before midnight. A central base saves you two hours a day.

Nanxiang is the home of the original xiaolongbao, the soup dumpling that became Shanghai's signature snack. The old town around Nanxiang Station is where to try it, along with noodle shops and small local restaurants on the side streets. Jiading Town has casual Chinese places around the old streets and near the university campus; Anting is mostly mall and chain food plus hotel restaurants.

For anything more ambitious, eat in central Shanghai before you ride back. Jiading's strength is cheap, everyday local cooking, not destination dining.

Metro Line 11 is the backbone: it runs from central Shanghai out through Nanxiang and Anting to North Jiading. From People's Square or Jing'an, allow roughly 45–70 minutes depending on your destination station, with a change onto Line 11 where needed. Taxis and ride-hailing work well for the last stretch, since sights sit 1–3 km from the stations.

Shanghai International Circuit is served by shuttle buses and extended metro services on race weekends; check the operator's race-week instructions before you travel, as arrangements change each year. Within Jiading, local buses connect the metro to the old towns and the Auto Museum, and metered taxis are cheap for short hops.
