First, count your nights. Under a week, stay on Mahé and add one island only; each ferry crossing costs half a day once you add transfers and waiting. With 8–12 nights, the classic split of Mahé, Praslin and La Digue works well, and you can drop the last night on Mahé if your flight leaves late.
Second, decide whether you want a car. On Mahé and Praslin, a rental car opens up beaches and restaurants, but roads are narrow, left-hand drive and have deep gutters, so many travellers take buses and taxis instead. On La Digue you do not need one: bicycles and a few ox-cart taxis cover the island.
Third, pick the beach for the season. The northwest of Mahé, including Beau Vallon, is calmer in the southeast trade winds (roughly May–September), while the south and east are better in the northwest monsoon (roughly November–March).
